Illinois 2003 State Quarter:
Honoring Abraham Lincoln’s Legacy in a Numismatic Tribute

The 2003 Illinois State Quarter pays homage to the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, who spent his formative years in Illinois during the early 1800s.

The quarter showcases an outline of the state with a depiction of Lincoln proudly walking. Behind him, the iconic log cabin and farm symbolize his famous roots. The caption “Land of Lincoln” celebrates his association with Illinois.

Encircling the coin are 21 stars, representing Illinois as the 21st state admitted into the Union. The phrase “21st State – Century” further commemorates this historical milestone.

On the right side, the Chicago skyline stands tall, signifying the state’s thriving modern city.

This coin not only honors Lincoln’s enduring legacy but also marks Illinois’s significant role in American history as the 21st state to join the Union.

The 50 State Quarters Program was launched in 1999 by the U.S. Mint and was a 10-year initiative that honored each of the 50 states. The U.S. Mint issued five new quarters each year in the order that the states ratified the Constitution or were admitted into the Union.

The coins have a common obverse design of George Washington and a state-specific reverse design. The coins were produced for about 10 weeks each and will never be produced again.
