New Hampshire 2000 State Quarter:
A Tribute to the Majestic Old Man of the Mountain
The New Hampshire 2000 State Quarter depicts the 40-foot-tall, “The Old Man of the Mountain,” a natural rock formation that was once a popular tourist destination in New Hampshire. Sadly, the formation collapsed in 2003. The mountain, formed naturally, looked like an elderly man’s face when looked at from the right angle.
The state motto, “Live Free or Die,” has been used for numerous sayings, quotes, and movies and is a reference to the state’s strong commitment to individual liberty.
On a side note, after two final designs were chosen, the US Mint suggested the use of the famed Old Man of the Mountain, and the rest shall we say, is history.
The coin was finally designed by William Cousins, who also designed the reverse of the 2000 Vermont State Quarter.
