New York 2001 State Quarter: Commemorating New York’s Historic Role in America
The 2001 New York State Quarter was the 11th coin released in the 50 State Quarters Program and the first released in 2001.
The quarter showcases the iconic Statue of Liberty, which was given to the United States as a gift from France for winning independence from Great Britain during the American Revolution. Alongside Lady Liberty, the coin features the historic Erie Canal, while 11 stars proudly commemorate New York’s admission into the Union on July 26, 1788.
The powerful phrase “Gateway to Freedom,” on the coin pays homage to New York City’s enduring role as a vital entry point into the United States. Ellis Island, a poignant symbol of hope and opportunity, served as the gateway for countless immigrants seeking a new beginning on American soil.
